Powerful jump

Powerful jump

To quickly gain elevation, flying squirrels push from the ground using their very powerful hindlegs, breaking with their vertically held and flattened tails to gain maximum height (much like a cat jumping on the table from the floor) before opening their flying membrane and gliding to a nearby tree. Here a flying squirrel bursts from its cache of fir cones buried deep in snow, leaving a potential intruder startled while gliding away to safety. Such escapes are far less successful with sophisticated aerial predators and flying squirrels rustling noisily under snow and too confident of their escape strategy are a staple winter food of local great horned owls.
